HR Related - Casual Employee on Workers Compensation

A casual employee hurt on the job is on worker's compensation. Employed for a specific role, there were beginning to be performance issues which had been discussed and noted. Given it's a casual role in a small business, and that the employee has been off work for 2 months, the position has been filled for that particular shift.

Can the employee be terminated? If not, can they be offered other lighter duties so long as the Doctor says yes? There is some evidence to suggest that the casual employee may be stretching the truth a little.
